POPLARVILLE --- The host Pearl River Community College Lady Wildcats went 2-2 in the annual Wildcat Invitational Tournament here Friday and Saturday, taking victories over East Mississippi and Itawamba, but fell to reigning NJCAA national champ LSU-Eunice (La.) and Faulkner State (Ala.).
MONROEVILLE, Ala. --- Pearl River Community College’s Lady Wildcats split with Alabama Southern here Tuesday, falling 7-6 in the first game of the doubleheader for the host Lady Eagles first win of the season before rebounding with a convincing 9-4 victory in the nightcap.
PRCC is now 3-3 overall, while ASCC is 1-5.
EUNICE, La. --- Reigning NJCAA Division II national champion LSU-Eunice proved more than worthy of its No. 2 softball ranking here Tuesday, sweeping Pearl River Community College’s Lady Wildcats 4-0 and 20-0 (five innings) to remain unbeaten at 7-0.
PRCC, which swept Alabama Southern CC 8-0 (five innings) and 7-1 a day earlier in its season openers in Poplarville, evened its overall record to 2-2.
POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College opened its 2015 softball season in grand fashion here Monday, sweeping Alabama Southern 8-0 (five innings) in the opening contest and 7-1 in the nightcap.
All-Region 23 sophomore hurler Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High picked up the shutout win in the opening game with a one-hitter and recording six strikeouts, while freshman Skylar Cook out of St. Amant High (La.) got the nightcap win.
ASCC dropped to 0-2 on the season.
POPLARVILLE --- Three Pearl River Community College softball standouts have grabbed Region 23 and MACJC post-season honors for 2014.
Freshman pitcher Rachel Hickman out of Poplarville High was named to the All-Region 23 team, while sophomore catcher Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High and sophomore shortstop Kaci Lantrip of Terry High were named to the All-MACJC squad.
ELLISVILLE --- Pearl River Community College wrapped its 2014 softball season here Saturday with a 7-1 loss to second-ranked Jones County in the Region 23 Tournament semi-finals in Community Bank Park.
The Lady Wildcats finished the year at 28-20 overall, while the host Lady Bobcats improved to 47-2 and took on top-ranked LSU-Eunice (La.) in the championship game later Saturday. JCJC, which fell to LSU-E 5-2 in Game 3 of the tournament, fell to the Lady Bengals 6-1 in the regional championship game 6-1 that was called after four-and-a-half innings due to weather conditions.
ELLISVILLE --- Surprisingly, Pearl River Community College is one win away from nabbing an NJCAA National Tournament berth set May 14-17 at Traceway Park in Clinton.
POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats enter Region 23 Tournament play Thursday against the second-ranked and MACJC state champ Jones County Lady Bobcats at 6 p.m. in Community Bank Park in Ellisville.
The contest will mark the second meeting of the squads in less than a week, as JCJC, hosts of the regional event, knocked off PRCC 9-0 (five innings) in both team’s opening game in the MACJC State Tournament last Friday at Itawamba CC in Fulton.
FULTON --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats went three-and-out at the MACJC State Softball Tournament played here at Itawamba Community College.
The River plummeted into the losers’ bracket with an opening 9-0 (five innings) setback to second-ranked Jones County on Friday before rebounding with a 5-0 shutout to eliminate host ICC on Saturday to clinch a berth in May 8-10’s Region 23 Tournament at JCJC in Ellisville, but was eliminated immediately afterwards with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Mississippi Gulf Coast.
FULTON --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats face the end of their season after falling to the second-ranked Jones County Lady Bobcats 9-0 in five innings Friday in their opening game of the MACJC State Softball Tournament underway here at Itawamba Community College.
PRCC will face North Division champ ICC, 8-2 losers to Mississippi Gulf Coast to open Friday’s action, at 3 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. JCJC, the South Division champ, takes on MGCCC to kickoff Saturday’s action with the loser of that contest playing the PRCC-ICC winner at 5 p.m.
