Wildcats earn split of doubleheader against Southwest

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College shook off a lop-sided loss in the first game, coming back to gain a split of an MACJC doubleheader against Southwest Mississippi Tuesday at Wildcat Stadium.

The Bears roughed up the Wildcats 17-2 in the opener, but PRCC won the nightcap 4-2, behind a complete-game effort on the mound from John Carter Sanner.

Pearl River finished the day 19-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play. SMCC is now 16-7 and 6-4.

Southwest savaged six Wildcat pitchers in the first game, which was interrupted in the third inning by a weather delay of about an hour and a half. At that time, the Bears owned a 14-0 lead after scoring six runs in the second inning and seven in the third.

Duncan Cornfoot had a grand slam, and Brady Anderson also drove in four runs for SMCC. Carter Hankins had a solo home run for the Wildcats.

Justin Demary (2-1) took the loss and Jacob Buchanan (3-2) was the winner for the Bears.

Sanner improved to 5-1 for the season with his effort in the nightcap. The sophomore right-hander allowed just four hits, struck out eight and walked two. The Bears scored their only runs on a two-run homer by Darian Tunstall in the second inning.

PRCC took the lead for good on Zachary Clark’s two-run double in the third inning, and the Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth an RBI single by Lucas Scott. Braden Smith (2-1) was the losing pitcher for Southwest.

Pearl River is scheduled to host Itawamba for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
