POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College didn’t do a very good job of handling success Wednesday afternoon, dropping both games of non-conference doubleheader to Coastal Alabama-South.
One day after the Wildcats climbed into the NJCAA Division II rankings at No. 12, they were beaten badly by the Sun Chiefs, 16-8 and 11-1 in the twinbill at Bay Minette, Ala.
PRCC (9-3) committed four errors in the opener, allowing eight unearned runs to score, and CACC-S (11-6) held the Wildcats to just three hits, while using a 10-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning to finish the sweep.
Pearl River got off to a good start, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk and a home run by sophomore Simon Landry (Ponchatoula, La.), his fourth of the season.
But the Sun Chiefs plated four unearned runs in the bottom of the first off freshman Miles Smith (Laurel), the first of five pitchers employed by PRCC. CACC-S added a run in the second and three more in the fourth.
The Wildcats got those three runs back in the fifth, when sophomore Derek Eberly (Blountstown, Fla.) tripled to lead off and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Wiley Cleland (Columbia).
Doubles by freshman Noah Barron (Hoover, Ala.) and redshirt freshman Matt Taylor (Raleigh) drove in the other two runs in the inning.
However, the Sun Chiefs broke it open with five runs in the fifth and added three more in the sixth after Pearl River scored three runs in the top of the inning on just one hit, an RBI single by freshman Reis Trager (Moss Point). Smith (1-1) took the loss for PRCC.
CACC-S took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off sophomore starter Colby White (Foxworth), then sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning to blow the game open.
The Wildcats were held to just three singles, two coming in the top of the fourth, including an RBI hit by Taylor. White (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Pearl River.
PRCC will be back home for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Spoon River (Ill.) on Sunday. The Wildcats have moved their doubleheader against Elaine P. Nunez (La.) to 4 p.m. Tuesday, instead of Wednesday as originally scheduled.
