Wildcats hang on to defeat Jones County 3-2

jevaun ennisPearl River Community College got what it needed in the men’s soccer regular-season finale against Jones County.

The Wildcats put together a brilliant first half, and that was enough to defeat the Bobcats 3-2 in the second Cat Fight of the season Tuesday night at the PRCC Sports Complex.

The win clinched second place in the South Division for PRCC (8-6 overall, 5-3 division). The Wildcats will host Hinds at 7 p.m. next Tuesday in the first round of the MACJC playoffs. JCJC completed its season 5-8-1 and 2-6.

Freshman Jevaun Ennis (Maypen, Jamaica) was sensational for the Wildcats, scoring all three goals in the first half.

Ennis put the Wildcats ahead at the 15:43 mark of the first half on a textbook pass from freshman Bo Bowman (Bay St. Louis).

Just four minutes later, at 19:42, Ennis took a pass from sophomore West Zimmerman (Bay St. Louis) along the left sideline and curled a shot from the left corner into the net for a 2-0 lead.

A tripping foul in the 18-yard box in the final minute of the half resulted in a successful penalty kick by Ennis for a 3-0 halftime lead.

JCJC rallied with a PK of its own from Glenn Waters in the 49th minute, and Waters narrowed the margin at 80:17 off a free kick from Thomas Carlile. However, the Wildcats were able to play out the remaining time to secure the win.

Ennis led PRCC with 6 shots, 4 on goal, and the Wildcats had 19 shots in all, 8 on goal, while holding the Bobcats to just 10 shots, 4 on goal.

The Wildcats needed the win to secure second place in the South after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime loss this past Saturday at Southwest.

PRCC took a 2-1 lead into the final two minutes of regulation on goals by Bowman and sophomore T.J. Gines (Moss Point), both assisted by redshirt sophomore Parker Rose (Bay St. Louis).

But the Wildcats gave up an own-goal in the 89th minute and surrendered a deciding PK in the 106th minute.
