Wildcats open conference play with sweep of Southwest

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College got its MACJC schedule off to a successful beginning, sweeping a doubleheader from Southwest Mississippi Wednesday at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats overcame an early 6-0 deficit in the opener to win 8-6, then used a pair of four-run rallies to set the stage for an 11-4 victory in the nightcap.

Sophomore Sarah Depperschmidt (Hurley) smacked a two-run triple to cap a five-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener, and the Wildcats (8-4 overall, 2-0 conference) took full advantage of 10 errors by the Bears in the two games.

PRCC fell behind 6-0 at the start of the day, as Southwest scored two runs in the first, three in the second and one in the third, chasing sophomore starter Olivia Holley (Biloxi).

Pearl River started its comeback with three runs in the bottom of the third, when sophomore Ramey Taylor (Hurley) singled to lead off. Depperschmidt also singled, then sophomore Anna Grace Cooley (Lucedale) reached on an error off a sacrifice bunt.

Sophomore Ilyssa Easton (Hurley) walked to drive the first run in, and two more scored on an error off the bat of redshirt freshman Destiny Wesley (LaPlace, La.).
The Wildcats’ winning rally in the sixth began when freshman Elizabeth Taggard (Picayune) and sophomore Halle Melone (Oklahoma City) both reached on errors to open the inning.

Freshman Ramee Cochran (Lucedale) singled to drive in a run, and freshman Mary Grace Turner (Leakesville) singled to load the bases. Taylor reached on another error to score a run, and Depperschmidt followed with her go-ahead triple.

Cooley drove in an insurance run with a single, but freshman reliever Rylee Swilley (Kiln) didn’t need it, as she retired the Bears in order in the top of the seventh, earning her first career victory after two hard-luck losses. She allowed a run on two hits in five innings.

The Wildcats spotted Southwest a run in the top of the first inning, then took command in the bottom of the second with four runs. Melone led off with a single and sophomore Brook Smith (Waynesboro) reached on an error off a sacrifice bunt, both runners advancing a base.

Taylor drew a walk to load the bases, and Melone scored on a passed ball. Depperschmidt drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, and Taylor scored on another passed ball. Easton had an RBI single to cap the rally.

The Bears got one run back in the third, but PRCC added to its lead with another four-run rally in the fourth.

Smith drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an error. Depperschmidt reached on a bunt single and Cooley loaded the bases on yet another error, setting the table for a two-run triple by freshman Neely McLeod (Lucedale). McLeod made it 8-2 on another passed ball.

Depperschmidt drove in a run with a double in the fifth, and the Wildcats capped their day with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after Southwest scored a pair of runs in the top of the inning.

Easton walked to lead off and McLeod singled, with Easton reaching third on the play, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Melone. Cochran’s double drove in Pearl River’s last run of the day.

Freshman Dallas Blaker (Bay St. Louis) went five innings to improve her record to 2-0, and Holley finished up the final two innings in the circle.

The Wildcats will take to the road for their next two scheduled dates. They will travel to Monroeville, Ala. To take on Coastal Alabama-North at 1 p.m. Saturday, then PRCC will resume conference play at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hinds.
