Pearl River Community College broke open a tight game with a decisive surge to end the first half, then shot the lights out in the second half to roll past Louisiana Christian Prep 110-70 in men’s college basketball action Wednesday night at M.R. White Coliseum.
The Wildcats improved to 3-0 for the season; Louisiana Christian dropped to 5-3.
The Wildcats and the Disciples played through eight lead changes and three ties until the Wildcats took control over the last four minutes of the first half.
PRCC had one-and-done defensive efforts on four consecutive possessions during a 13-0 run, capped by a 3-point shot from sophomore Jerrod Rigby (Bay St. Louis). The Wildcats outscored Louisiana Christian 18-4 over the final 3:30 of the half to lead 49-36 at the break.
Pearl River came smoking out of the locker room for the second half, converting 35 of 53 shots (66.0 percent), including 10 of 19 from 3-point range. The Wildcats led by as many as 44 points in the final minutes.
Freshman Eric Thornton Jr. (Jackson) was the big gun for the Wildcats in the first half, finishing with 17 points, 13 in the opening period.
Sophomore Brandon Cranford (Louisville, Ky.) stole the show in the second half, hitting 4 of 4 shots from 3-point range to also finish with 17 points off the bench.
Sophomore Ray Anderson (New Orleans) had 14 points and 14 rebounds, freshman C.J. Brim added 13 points, and freshman Jonas James (Jackson) had 11 points and 7 assists for Pearl River.
The Wildcats will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday against the William Carey University junior varsity at M.R. White Coliseum.
