Junior Sanchez was in the right place at the right time for Pearl River Community College.
The sophomore from Oak Grove send a rocket shot from 30 yards out into the net with 3:06 to play in the second overtime to give the Wildcats a thrilling 1-0 victory over Hinds in the first round of the MACJC men’s soccer playoffs Tuesday night at the PRCC Sports Complex.
The victory sent PRCC (9-6-0) to the semifinals of the MACJC/Region 23 State Tournament at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland. The Wildcats will battle North Division champion East Central at 11 a.m. Saturday. Hinds finished its season 5-7-2.
Sanchez took a splendid back-pass from redshirt sophomore Kyle Estess (Laurel) near the left sideline and got an unobstructed shot that sailed just inside the left post for the game-winner at 107:54.
The shot was the last play in an entertaining, tightly-contested game that saw both teams just miss scoring opportunities.
Pearl River finished with 24 shots for the game, 9 on goal, while the Eagles had 20 shots, 10 on goal. But the Wildcats only allowed one ineffective shot in the overtime periods, while getting five shots and two corner kicks in the extra time.
Redshirt freshman Kobe Lie (Hattiesburg) stood tall in goal for the Wildcats with 10 saves, including three desperate stops late in regulation when Hinds got point-blank shots in front of the goal.
The Wildcats’ semifinal contest against East Central will be a rematch of an earlier meeting Sept. 25 at Poplarville, a 1-0 win for the Warriors, with the only goal coming on a penalty kick.
