Pearl River Community College desperately needed a doubleheader sweep Saturday against East Mississippi, and the Wildcats were tantalizingly close to getting what they needed.
After winning the opener 3-2, PRCC was one strike away from nailing down the win in the nightcap. Instead, the Lions rallied with a two-run, two-hit and salvaged a 3-2 victory in eight innings to gain a split of the two games at Wildcat Stadium.
Pearl River (14-16 overall) dropped to 6-12 in MACJC play, and saw their already-dim postseason hopes fade even further. East Mississippi (14-17 overall) stayed in playoff contention at 11-5 in league action.
In the first game, freshman Krista Robles’ RBI single in the sixth inning gave the Wildcats their winning margin, behind the pitching of sophomore Jackie Shows.
In Game 2, freshman Olivia Holley’s solo home run in the fifth gave PRCC a 1-0 lead, and Holley was close to making it stand up, until Layton Sills’ two-run single with two out in the top of the seventh.
The Wildcats tied it back up with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Kendall Wilkinson’s run-scoring double in the eighth inning, also with two outs, put the Lions ahead to stay.
Pearl River will travel to play top-ranked Jones County at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Ellisville, before returning home to face Mississippi Delta on Saturday.
