Wildcats sweep doubleheader at Bishop State

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College baseball took to the road for the first time this season, and had a successful trip to face Bishop State (Ala.) in a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Mobile, Ala.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh to outslug Bishop State 9-6 then got near air-tight pitching to take the nightcap 2-1.

PRCC (5-1) opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Simon Landry (Ponchatoula, La.) reached on a two-out single, the first hit in a 4 for 4 effort in the opener.

Freshman Noah Barron (Hoover, Ala.) reached on an error, and two runs came home on another error.

Bishop State (3-7) got a run back in the bottom of the first and tied it with a run in the third off Pearl River sophomore starter Camden Dusang (Carriere).

The Wildcats regained the lead in the fourth, when redshirt freshman Matt Taylor (Raleigh) doubled, stole third and scored on a groundout by sophomore Logan Walters (Moss Point). However, Bishop tied it again with run in the bottom of the fourth.

It was the same in the fifth as each team scored three times.

Sophomore Bryson Medious (Columbia) led off the fifth with a single and Landry followed with his second home run of the season. Barron doubled and scored on a single by freshman Wiley Cleland (Columbia).

After a scoreless sixth, PRCC broke the game open with its winning rally. Landry led off with a single, Barron reached on an error and both scored on a triple by Cleland. Freshman Shemar Page (Raleigh) drove in Cleland with a groundout.

Freshman Colin Danley (1-0) got the Wildcats out of further trouble in the bottom of the fifth, and pitched the sixth to earn the win. Freshman Jerod Meggs (Kosciusko) picked up his first save of the season, working around a two-out walk.

The Wildcats broke a scoreless game in the third, when freshman Reis Trager (Moss Point) led off with a walk. Sophomore Kevin Carter (Gulfport) sacrificed Trager to second, took third on a groundout and scored on a single by Medious.

Pearl River took a 2-0 lead in the sixth, when Landry was hit by a pitch leading off. He went to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Barron.

Bishop State got a run in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs then scoring on a wild pitch. However, the Wildcats got out of the jam with a strikeout, and Meggs came on in the seventh for his second save of the day.

Page (2-0) started, and pitched five scoreless, hitless innings, striking out eight and walking just one. In the two games, PRCC pitchers struck out 19 batters.

The Wildcats will be back home at 1 p.m. Tuesday for a doubleheader against Coastal Alabama-East, formerly Jeff Davis CC.
