Wildcats sweep Illinois Central to extend win streak

Pearl River sophomore Bryson Medious POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College took very little pity on the beleaguer pitching staff for Illinois Central Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep at Dub Herring Park.

The Wildcats rapped out 14 hits, seven in a decisive third-inning rally, to win the opener 12-1 in seven innings, then made the most of just four hits in taking the nightcap 7-1.

PRCC (9-1) increased its winning streak to six game in besting the Cougars (0-6), who opened their season with a three-day trip through South Mississippi, playing a doubleheader against Jones County on Friday and two games at Biloxi on Saturday.

Pearl River smacked three home runs in its big inning in the opener, and sophomore Simon Landry (Ponchatoula, La.) drove in four runs with three doubles in the second game.

Landry started the Wildcat offense in the bottom of the first inning of the first game, stroking a double into the gap in right-centerfield with two out. Landry took third on a single by freshman Wiley Cleland (Columbia) and scored on a double by freshman Noah Barron (Hoover, Ala.).

Illinois Central tied it with a run in the top of the second off redshirt sophomore Drake Nightengale (Sumrall), but left the bases loaded, and the Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Luke Harper (Meridian).

With one out in the bottom of the third, Barron singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and trotted home after a balk. Freshman Shemar Page (Raleigh) reached on a single, and sophomore Logan Walters (Moss Point) smacked a two-run homer to leftfield.

Harper followed with a single and was sacrificed to second. He reached third when sophomore Derek Eberly (Blountstown, Fla.) singled, and they both trotted home when redshirt sophomore Bryson Medious (Columbia) hit his first homer of the season.

Landry followed with his third round-tripper of the game to cap the big inning.

PRCC added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth as redshirt freshman Matt Taylor (Raleigh) drove in a run with a single and sophomore Scooter Ginn drove in two with a single to put the 10-run rule into effect.

Sophomore Camden Dusang (Carriere) pitched four innings of scoreless relief to improve his record to 2-0. He allowed two hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. Freshman Deyton Lingle (Lake) struck out two in retiring the Cougars in order in the seventh.

Freshman right-hander Shemar Page (Raleigh) had another superb outing in the second game, He retired the first 11 batters he faced, with six strikeouts, before running into trouble in the fourth.

Landry again started the Wildcats at the plate with a two-out double in the bottom of the first, Cleland was hit by a pitch and Barron reached on a dropped third strike, which allowed Landry to score. Cleland stole third and scored on another passed ball.

Eberly led off the third with a single and scored on a double by Landry, who stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cleland.

Page (3-0) walked three consecutive batters in the fourth with two out, then gave up a run-scoring single before getting the third out with the bases still loaded.

The Wildcats helped out their bullpen in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs. A single and two walks loaded the bases and Landry cleared them with his third double of the game, a gapper to rightfield.

Freshman Colin Danley (Lucedale) struck out two batters in the fifth, sophomore Luke Bradley (Pass Christian) struck out a batter in the sixth and freshman Jerod Meggs (Kosciusko) struck out two and got out of a bases-loaded jam after a single and two walks in the seventh.

PRCC will hit the road for its next action, a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Coastal Alabama-South in Bay Minette, Ala. The Wildcats are back home for two against Spoon River (Ill.) on Sunday.
