Wildcats sweep Tigers

            POPLARVILLE — The 10th-ranked Pearl River Wildcats swept with a pair of shutouts over Marion Military Institute (Ala.) here Wednesday in NJCAA doubleheader baseball action, taking a 10-0 six-inning victory and a 4-0 win.
            PRCC improved to 13-3 overall, while MMI out of Marion, Ala., dropped to 11-8.
            In the first game, Pearl River scored two in the bottom of the first, one in the second, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule.
            Starter Brandon Fry (1-0) out of Nease High in Jacksonville, Fla., picked up the win; while Bradley Rayborn of Purvis High saw relief duty.
            MMI starter Major Hargrove (0-1) got the loss, while Ryan Carline relieved.
            The visiting Tigers managed only two hits in the contest, while Darius Knight of Pearl River paced the Wildcats’ 12-hit attack with a home run and a double, including a whopping five RBIs. Ivan Garcia of Katy (Tex.) High tripled, while Forrest Dungan of Columbia High (one RBI), Braxton Lee of Picayune High (one RBI), Paul Pickerrell out of John Hardin High in Elizabethtown, Ky. (one RBI), and Krisjon Wilkerson of St. Stanislaus (one RBI) all had doubles. Carlos Gonzales out of Warren Central High in Vicksburg also had an RBI for The River.
            Each team committed one error in the game.
            In the nightcap game, things were scoreless for the first two-and-a-half innings before PRCC mustered solo runs in the bottom of the third and fourth frames before ending the scoring with two runs in the sixth.
            Starter Christian Talley (5-0) of Hancock County High, a Southern Miss signee, got the win in going the distance; while MMI starter Alex Henson (2-1) got the loss. Spencer Andrews and Stuart Springer saw relief duty for the Tigers.
            Marion Military finished with three hits, including doubles by Blaine Swift and Mitch Williams; while Kollin Cannon of St. Stanislaus paced PRCC’s five-hit effort with a double and two RBIs.. Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High also had an RBI.
            MMI committed two errors in the game to PRCC’s one.
            Pearl River returns to action with it hosts Illinois Central (Ill.) Sunday for a 2
p.m. doubleheader before hosting East Central in its MACJC South Division opener Tuesday in a 3 p.m. twin bill.
