Pearl River Valley EPA Extends a Helping Hand to PRCC Students

Pearl River Valley EPA Extends a Helping Hand to PRCC Students

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College hosted members of the Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association in celebration of PRVEPA helping PRCC students pay for college.

The scholarships given are funded by Pearl River Valley EPA members who decide to round up their monthly bills to the nearest dollar in order to support these students. The result of this generosity allowed each recipient $725.00 for their education.

Randy Wallace, General Manager of PRVEPA, spoke to the students about how they feel education is key to a person’s success and it wouldn’t have been possible without those student’s parent’s contribution and 50,000 other members in 12 counties that made this program successful. He also thanked the Greater Pinebelt Foundation for their partnership in the program. “We’ve collected 1.2 million dollars since 2012 and PRCC students get over half of that,” said Wallace about the program.

Dr. Adam Breerwood, PRCC President, spoke about the importance that Pearl River Valley EPA played in the ultimate culmination of these funds. “Without their vision and commitment to spreading this message people wouldn’t have bought in to this program. It is truly remarkable and a great opportunity for our students.”

PRCC freshman and scholarship recipient, Lane Steele, expressed his appreciation. "I'm really thankful for the community and Pearl River Valley Power giving back to us. It really helps me with tuition and dormitory costs and I am extremely grateful for their scholarship,” said Steele.

Over 140 freshman received “Round Up for Education” scholarships through this program and the students in attendance for the presentation each expressed gratefulness for the opportunity.

PRCC Hosts Veterans Day Breakfast

PRCC Hosts Veterans Day Breakfast

POPLARVILLE – The West Dining room of the Olivia Bender Cafeteria was filled to capacity for the Veterans Day breakfast hosted this morning at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville.

Maghan James, Assistant Vice President of Student Services, welcomed all to the event, thanked all veterans, PRCC employees, students, and community members for attending and introduced the speakers. PRCC students lead the crowd in the National Anthem and Randy Henry, Utility Lineman Instructor, said the blessing.

Retired Sergeant First Class Michael McGee, Lead Veteran's Administration Certifying Official at Southern Miss, and Retired Master Sergeant Thomas Brooks delivered the message for PRCC employees, students, and community members.

McGee spoke about the feeling of isolation many veterans have. “There are some on your campus today, Pearl River, that feel isolated today although they are in a classroom with 20 or 30 other people.” Said McGee. He also encouraged PRCC’s student veterans to allow themselves to engage with those around them and to reach out. “You chose to make a move you chose to serve and you will never again be civilian. However, you have more things alike with them that you do different.”

“I’m honored to be here today to pay our respect to those who have served and who have sacrificed and some have given the full measure of sacrifice,” said Brooks. “I don’t think veterans did it for fame or reward. They didn’t do it for placement or rank. They did it for simple obedience to duty.”

McGee presented Brooks with the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families Challenge Coin.

Maghan James also presented McGee with a gift of appreciation from PRCC for attending and presenting at the event.

PRCC continues to thank all veterans and their families for their service.
