Pearl River boasts the No. 1 HVAC program in Mississippi

Pearl River boasts the No. 1 HVAC program in Mississippi

POPLARVILLE, Miss. – Pearl River Community College’s Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology program was recently named No. 1 in the state, according to Air Filters Delivered.

“The success of this department is part of the mindset of career and technical education at Pearl River Community College,” Dean of Career and Technical Education Dr. Ed Pinero said. “We have allowed our students to do the hands-on lab work that is going to make them more efficient and effective in the workplace as well as in the classroom. We have gotten to the stage now where our programs are at a maturity level and they really implement the best practices for teaching.

“The students are learning this and now it’s being recognized nationally. I’m very excited for what the instructors and the HVAC Department have achieved.”

Air Filters Delivered got its start in 2010 and has made its mission to make quality products at accessible prices delivered directly to homes and businesses. The company recently analyzed data to see where students would find the best value education to pursue an HVAC career across the United States and PRCC’s HVAC program made it onto the list. The criteria used to compile the list was based on associate degree offerings, cost of attendance, and both the average salary and median pay of students six years post-enrollment.

Pearl River’s Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology program offers a 45-hour technical certificate and a 60-hour Associate in Applied Science degree that is offered at the Poplarville and Hattiesburg locations.

“It’s humbling,” Instructor of HVAC & Refrigeration Maintenance Technology on the Poplarville campus Eric McCoy said. “If I can give my students a solid foundation to build on, the sky is the limit. I expect commitment and honesty from my students. That’s the kind of student I want to turn out of this program.”

The program prepares individuals to work installing, maintaining, and operating small or medium air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems. Instruction prepares individuals to work in a commercial setting preforming special tasks relating to designing ductwork, assembly, installation, servicing, operation, and maintenance of heating and cooling systems according to the standards for the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), and Air Conditioning Refrigeration Institute (ARI). Instruction includes air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration devices; equipment, techniques, and systems; and maintenance and operation of these systems.

“Obviously number one is great,” Pinero said, “but we want to continue to strive for excellence and grow as a department. We want to thank Dr. Breerwood for allowing us to do the things that we do in our labs, supporting us in buying modern technology and have the modern classroom facilities to achieve number one status.”

Pearl River has 42 career and technical programs across its three locations as well as a wide range of academic offerings. For information about any of these programs visit prcc.edu.

Pearl River finalist for cultural heritage digitization award

Pearl River finalist for cultural heritage digitization award

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River Community College’s Garvin H. Johnson Library is attempting to save the past in the present through a sought-after historical preservation award.

Pearl River is one of three finalists for the Mississippi Digital Library’s Cultural Heritage Digitization Award. This award is offered annually in conjunction with partners across the state. The chosen collection will be digitized and published electronically as part of the collection in the Mississippi Digital Library.

The award is available to any Mississippi-based cultural heritage society or organization that possesses items significant to Mississippi history and scholarship, but does not have the personnel, physical or technical resources to create a digital collection. Preference is given to materials that are considered at-risk or those that showcase Mississippi from a new or different perspective.

“This grant will provide preservation and digital access to the PRCC Scrapbooks,” said Public Services Librarian Amanda Meyers. “Being digitally accessible will allow more people to read and search for information related to the college and the people who have shaped the school and community into what it is now.”

Meyers was the instigator of Pearl River receiving the award and plans to take on the task of processing the meta-data for the project should PRCC be selected.

Before an official public relations department was a staple on college campuses, the duties of preserving local news coverage often fell to those already charged with protecting historical materials — librarians.

The Garvin H. Johnson Library, located on the Poplarville campus, houses the college’s archive. This collection includes yearbooks, publications such as bulletins, reports and the campus newspaper. One of the most interesting and comprehensive aspects of the archive are the newspaper clippings related to the college, its students, faculty, alumni, clubs and sports teams.

These scrapbooks tell the history of the college through local news and reflect the influence the institution has had on the local community. As a whole, the collection also represents the lower Pearl River Valley and its rural community. Significant events such as World War II and Hurricane Camille are reflected in these clippings through the impact on the institution.

Pearl River was visited Tuesday by Jenifer Ishee, a Digital Archivist with Mississippi State University and a Mississippi Digital Library board member, to review the material being requested for digitization.

If Pearl River receives the award, it would be provided 80 cumulative hours of on-site, archival quality digitation service to be completed over a one-week period by the digitation team. The staff would also receive training to aid in future projects on topics including digitation, file naming and structure, best practices and policies and digital preservation.

Additionally, the library would receive copies of all master and access digital files created by the digitation team via transferable media and gain a partnership with the Mississippi Digital library including a digital collection hosted on the msdiglib.org to showcase the newly digitized materials.

The recipient of the award should be announced by early February.

Pearl River partners with local artist for story-time with potential future Wildcats

Pearl River partners with local artist for story-time with potential future Wildcats

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Pearl River Community College’s Early Childhood Academy provided new reading material for potential future Wildcats through a partnership with a young local author.

As part of its community outreach through Pearl River Community College’s ECA, PRCC helped to provide children at TJ’s Learning Center with a free copy of Noah Harris’ book, “Successville” Wednesday.  Harris is a graduate of Oak Grove High School and is en route to his Successville as he attends Harvard University so that he may be equipped to have a profound impact on the world.

"We have had so many great opportunities to make an impact in our community through the Early Childhood Academy of Pearl River Community College," Vice President for Forrest County Operations Dr. Jana Causey said. "It is imperative that we begin preparing students to be successful from the earliest age possible. Exposing these children to accomplished community members like Mr. Noah Harris and his book called Successville provides an example to them that communicates and encourages confidence to achieve great things. Pearl River Community College is proud to provide this opportunity."

Successville is a compelling story that encourages children to dream big and reach for their goals in life by valuing their education. This story teaches that a great education is key to everything you want to achieve, and a great education begins in the classroom by paying attention, listening, and working hard.

The mission of the ECA is to provide ongoing high-quality technical assistance and professional development to child care providers and families through resource and referral services to ensure a nurturing learning environment that promotes readiness. Locally, PRCC’s ECA offers various fun and educational events on campus and in the community for local children.

“We are thankful to have such a young and accomplished author from our community read to children at one of our local child development centers,” Coordinator of Early Childhood Academy Katherine Dedeaux said. “We work with the community and local childcare development centers to increase kindergarten readiness.”

Based on the 10th day enrollment report provided by the Mississippi Community College Board, Pearl River is up 9.5 percent in head count and up 7.5 percent in credit hours.

“Our continued growth is a testament to the exceptional work of our Board of Trustees, faculty and staff,” Pearl River President Dr. Adam Breerwood said. “All of these individuals are committed to providing affordable and accessible higher education opportunities to those we serve. This record breaking growth serves as justification that we are answering the needs of our surrounding communities. With several new building projects on the horizon and plans for additional programs and services, I think our best days are still ahead of us.”

Administrators attribute PRCC’s sustained enrollment growth largely to the cumulative efforts of individuals across all Pearl River’s three locations and their commitment to supporting and encouraging students.

“As a person who monitors enrollment numbers for the institution daily, I have realized that growth is a result of everyone working together for the good of the student,” Vice President for Poplarville Campus and Instruction Dr. Martha Lou Smith said. “While I watch the concrete numbers change, I also see the intangibles that transform as the numbers change. When everyone is working together with an end goal of student success, then good things happen.”

Expansion of student orientation and support along the way has led to student retention through the removal of previous roadblocks in their education.

“Enrollment being up eight consecutive semesters is exciting and rewarding for the college,” Associate Vice President for Student Success/QEP Dr. Amy Townsend said. “I believe this is largely reflective of the collaborative relationship between so many departments as we onboard students through targeted touch points and then come alongside students as they reach their academic goals. We are all ambassadors of the college

“From the initial efforts of our dynamic recruitment team, to genuine and caring staff in our student services office, we strive to make the process as seamless as possible. We welcome students through our ROAR New Student Orientation and connect them with the services of our First-Year Experience program and Student Success Centers. In conjunction with our faculty and professional staff, we strive to provide students with the best possible learning environment and advisement. In short, we wholly embrace the ‘Wildcat Way’ philosophy – Pride, Respect, Class, and Character. I could not be more proud to be connected with such an amazing team.”

Building projects across all locations and increased technology are just a few advancements that have fueled the institution’s achievements. Pearl River continues to grow and adapt to the increasing demand for quality education while still keeping PRCC accessible, affordable and efficient.
