CARES Act - Higher Education Emergency Relief Grants (HEERF I) Student Awards Reporting

Pearl River Community College received $2,192,975 from the CARES Act for direct relief to students. All funds have been disbursed to eligible students as of June 8, 2020.

Which students are eligible to receive HEERF I  Emergency financial aid grants?

Under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA), students were determined eligible to participate in CARES Act Relief Grant program. Eligibility criteria included, but was not limited to, students who are:

  • United States citizens or nationals, permanent residents, or other eligible non-citizens.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate recipients.
  • Registered with the Selective Service, if male.
  • Enrolled in a degree or certificate program at Pearl River Community College on March 13, 2020.
  • Not on financial aid suspension.
  • Making satisfactory academic progress in their course of study.

* The CARES Act funds were not distributed to students who were enrolled in an all-online program.

How will the amount of HEERF I Emergency Relief Grants be determined?

Students who were identified as possibly eligible for CARES Act funds were also notified by email and given a June 1st deadline to complete eligibility requirements. 

Please note that 3,000 students were identified at the institution who are or could be possibly eligible to participate in the Federal student financial aid programs under Section 484 of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, and thus are eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. Of the total students identified, 2,894.00 received CARES Act Relief funds.

How do students receive HEERF I emergency financial aid grants?

Pearl River Community College believes all students enrolled during the spring 2020 semester incurred additional expenses due to the Pearl River Community College’s transition to online learning as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and are entitled to CARES Act funds. Pearl River Community College also believes that disbursing CARES Act Relief funds to students as soon as possible follows the intent of the CARES Act.

PRCC released $2,192,169.03 for 2,883 students. All eligible students at Pearl River Community College received funds ranging from $674.55 to $903.84. The determinations were made based off need. The amount distributed was determined by the amount of students who qualified and the amount of funds available.
