Barbering/Stylist

The Barbering/Stylist program
is a 12-month program of study designed to prepare an individual to become
a licensed barber. Students learn skills and techniques of cutting,
styling, shaving, coloring and lightening of the hair. Instruction
also includes hygiene, safety, pathology of the skin, scalp and hair disorders,
and equipment sterilization. The curriculum includes the study
of sales, business management, law, and customer relationships.
The curriculum is designed
to comply with the standards of the Mississippi State Board of Barber Examiners
and consists of a minimum of 1500 contact hours of study. Students
that successfully complete the program requirements will earn a Certificate
of Proficiency. Graduates will be qualified to take the State Barber
Board Certification Examination to become a licensed barber in the state
of Mississippi.
Enrollment is open in the
fall semester only. A new class is admitted each August with graduation
taking place the following July.
Employment Opportunities:
Barbering is a growing and challenging field. Barbers work in small
or large shops and in many different settings such as shopping centers,
hotels, and office buildings. A barber may become a shop owner.
Admission Requirements:
1. Submit PRCC Application
for Admission to the Admissions Office;
2. Submit PRCC Barbering
Application to Barbering Program;
3. Submit an official high
school transcript indicating graduation date or GED transcript indicating
passing to the Admissions Office;
4. Score of 9.0 or better
in mathematics and score of 10.0 or better in reading on the TABE (Tests
of Adult Basic Education) is required (TABE testing can be scheduled by
calling the PRCC Counseling Center at 601-403-1250);
5. Submit official transcript
from every college attended (if applicable) to the Admissions Office.
Selection for admissions
into the Barbering/Stylist Program is based on the date of application,
TABE score, and slot availability.
