The Heating, Air Conditioning
and Refrigeration Technology program prepares individuals to work in engineering
departments or private firms installing, maintaining, and operating small
or medium air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems. Instruction
prepares individuals to work in a commercial setting performing special
tasks relating to designing ductwork, assembly, installations, servicing,
operation, and maintenance of heating and cooling systems according to
the standards of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air
Conditioning Engineers Inc., Air Conditioning Contractors of American (ACCA),
and Air Conditioning Refrigeration Institute (ARI).
The student will have the
option to pursue an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree which includes
fifteen semester hours of academic coursework in addition to the program
core courses or to pursue a Certificate of Proficiency which consists of
the program core courses.
Employment Outlook:
Projections indicate that the demand for skilled technicians in South Mississippi
and across the United States is likely to remain excellent for the next
five to seven years. Beginning journeyman technicians average between
$10 - $15 per hour depending on job responsibilities and employment location.
The beginning salary for service technicians in the Heating, Air Conditioning
and Refrigeration field is estimated to be $30,000 per year.
Admission Requirements:
Applicants for Electrical
Technology must have the following documents submitted:
1. PRCC Application for
Admission;
2. An official transcript
from an accredited high school indicating date of graduation or GED transcript
indicating passing;
3. Official transcript from
every college attended (if applicable);
4. ACT scores (for students
pursing the AAS degree).
