

Masons work with brick, concrete
and glass block, tiles, terra cotta, and stone. This course gives
the student training in brick and block laying, masonry construction, masonry
mathematics and estimating, blueprint reading and estimating, advanced
block laying, advanced brick laying, and chimney and fireplace construction.
At the end of this one year career course, the student can expect to find
a lucrative job in the commercial, industrial, or residential masonry
construction field.
Upon successful completion
of the one-year curriculum, the student will be awarded a Certificate of
Proficiency.
The Brick, Block and Stonemasonry program is taught by Porter Soley. Soley has been in the masonry business for over 30 years, starting his career at Pearl River Community College as a student in the masonry program in 1970. After graduating, he served his apprenticeship through the Gulfport Bricklayers & Craft Local, earning his Journeyman's card in 1975. His experience includes commercial, industrial and residential masonry. Soley owned his own business and sub-contracted in the area.
PRCC Brick, Block, and Stonemasonry students have demonstrated their Brickmasonry skill expertise through State and National Skills USA competition. Each year since 1998, PRCC students have taken the first place title in the Brickmasonry division at the State Skills USA competition and have placed in the top ten each year in the division at the National Skills USA competition.
