The Welding and Cutting Program
is designed to prepare the student for entry-level employment in the field
of welding and cutting. Welding is utilized in manufacturing, structural
construction, pipeline construction, offshore industry, custom job shops,
and as an important part of many businesses. The curriculum includes
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Cored
Arc Welding (FCAW), Pipe Welding, Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC), Carbon Arc
Cutting, Oxyfuel Cutting, and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). The
student will learn safety in all aspects of welding and cutting.
The welding competencies
required in this curriculum were developed to coincide with the Guide for
the Training and Qualification of Welding Personnel: Entry Level
Welders (AWS EG2.0-95) and Specification for Qualification and Certification
for Entry Level Welders (AWS QC 10-95), developed by the American Welding
Society.
Upon successful completion
of the one-year curriculum, the student will be awarded a Certificate of
Proficiency and may make application for AWS Certification.
Applicants for the Welding
and Cutting Program must have a high school diploma or a GED; or if the
student is at least 18 years of age and does not have a high school diploma
or GED, the student must take the Careers Performance Assessment Test (CPAT)
and demonstrate “Ability to Benefit” by scoring a minimum of 43 in reading,
a minimum of 42 in language usage, and a minimum of 41 in math. CPAT
