Workforce
Development Center
The
mission of the Workforce Development Center is to offer and arrange workforce
education and training In Pearl River Community College's six county district.
The Workforce Development Center works with a District Council, consisting
of local business and Industry leaders, to implement the provisions of
the Workforce Act and accomplish the purpose of the Workforce Development
Center. The Workforce Development Center focuses on the local workforce
and the training necessary to enable members of the workforce to perform
effectively and efficiently in their jobs.
WORKFORCE
TRAINING FOR BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
The
Workforce Development Center arranges customized Workforce Training programs
for business and industry. This may consist of pre employment, post employment,
technical and basic skills training. The staff of the Workforce Development
Center has the knowledge and skills to analyze and determine the workforce
training required by a business or industry and to design and implement
instructional programs that meet the needs of the customer. Management
leadership training is also available. Persons certified in ISO 9000, OS
9000 and Zenger-Miller credentials are available to meet the training needs
of our customers. Computer Classes are another of the training services
offered by the Workforce Development Center, and may be offered either
at the customer's site or on the campus of Pearl River Community College.
Computer Classes can be customized to meet the demands of each industry
served.
WORKKEYS
SERVICE CENTER
The
Workforce Development Center functions as a WORKKEYS SERVICE CENTER. Working
with Charter States, national education organizations, educators, employers
and experts in employment and training requirements, ACT identified. workplace
skills that help individuals successfully perform a wide range of jobs.
These skills form the basis of the workers System and include Reading for
Information, Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, Applied Technology,
Writing, Listening, Teamwork and Observation. The workers focus is to assist
customers with selection, retention and training of new and current employees.
The three phases of workers are:
JOB PROFILING
-This process will assist a customer in determining the level of skill
required to perform a job in any of the eight skill areas measured by workers.
This process involves a trained job profiler and Subject Matter Experts
who are currently employed in the job being profiled. An analysis of the
critical tasks and the levels of skills required to perform the tasks will
be determined.

ASSESSMENTS
-After completing a job profile, individuals may be assessed in any of
the eight areas to determine if there is a match between their individual
profile and the profile of the job. This may be used in selection of new
employees, determining training needs and for promotion and transfers within
a company.

TRAINING
-From the results of the assessments, a company can identify training needs.
Training may be in the area of basic skills, interpersonal skills or technical
skills. This system will help assess the current workforce and identify
areas in which improvement may be needed.
The Workforce
Development Center provides all workers services, and provides on site
scoring for assessments.
ADULT
LEARNING
Adult
Basic Education is a very important part of the Workforce Development Center
Adult Education classes are offered in each of the six counties served
by Read River Community College as welt as on both college campuses. Day
and night GED classes are offered to meet the needs of the adults seeking
to further their education. Basic Skills courses offered include reading,
mathematics, language arts, science, social studies and life coping skills.
Traditional textbook teaching is combined with individualized computer
based instruction and tutoring. ACT preparation is also offered for adult
education classes. GED Testing for students seeking their high school equivalency
degree is offered by Pearl River Community College at both the Hattiesburg
and Poplarville campuses.
SMALL
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER
The
SBDC is a non-profit professional management service funded by PRCC, the
state of Mississippi and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The SBDC
provides free counseling to the small business community, including assistance
with accounting, financial analysis, management and marketing. Counseling
and other services are provided by experienced professionals.
Existing
businesses in need of assistance in identifying and coping with problems
affecting profits, employee relations, or liability may contact the SBDC
for information. Workshops may be requested that deal with a range of topics
associated with business operations. As new laws are passed that affect
the business community, the SBDC strives to keep the small business operator
informed through pertinent seminars and workshops. These events are routinely
advertised in newspapers and mailings..
