  • Junior colleges in state take a 10 percent cut form the legislature. Fourth reduction in the last five years.
  • Erosion control project of dump turns into beautification project...now site of president’s home
  • Dr. Alexander cited as one of the nation’s 100 outstanding school administrators by the Executive Educator.
  • Former Hattiesburg Mayor Bobby Chain  named to represent PRCC on the  Advisory Council to the Economic Development Foundation.
  • Spring semester enrollment is a record with a 12 percent increase or 1593 students.

  • Dr. Alexander’s report on in-house needs assessment sets stage for future
  • PRCC board reinstated the five-member Presidential Search Committee to organize and implement plans for the  inauguration of Dr. Alexander.
  • Industry Services report 374 were trained during the year

  • PRCC graduate Dr. Thomas Malone, the president of Milliken, the world’s largest privately owned company, was named National Phi Theta Kappa Distinguished Alumnus.
  • Pearl River wins first annual state-wide Computer Programming contest
  • Linda Keith, a freshman nursing major from Hattiesburg, wins a national essay contest sponsored by the National Student Nurses Association.

  • Every student attending PRCC has access to a computer terminal

  • Fall enrollment was biggest jump of any community college at 18.6 percent.  Official numbers at the end of six weeks had full-time enrollment jumped from 1,677 to 1,986 or 309 students...234 more academic and 91 more technical. The 1985 academic total  was 616 compared to 1,144 in 1990...total was 1,642 in 1985; 2,741 in 1990 or a 67 percent increase
  • Dr. Alexander elected to serve as a delegate to the White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services

  • Tracy Williams first student to receive full-tuition scholarship to the University of Michigan. Retired Army Lt. Colonel John O. Robertson, a PRCC graduate, sets up the scholarship in honor of Ruth Lobdell.
  • Foundation meets its $125,000 Endowment Challenge. The college received an additional $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Extravaganza VIII sets record with $50,400
  • Pearl River Lady Wildcats make history by  winning Region 23 crown and advancing to the overall national  tournament where the Lady Wildcats finished seventh.

The college’s Dental Hygiene program is recognized as an exemplary program in the category    of “best programs using technology with occupations students” and on the Poplarville campus the Learning Alternatives program is singled out for “best programs using technology in staff development”
  • Instructor Joyce Mullins receives Phil Hardin award to study the Black Howler in Argentina
  • PRCC wins Educational Computer Association programming contest
  • Extravaganza Ten raises record $62,000

  • Senator Cochran agrees to deliver dedication address for Nursing Building on August 12

1998






January-February

  • President Ted Alexander and his wife, Barbara, are in a one-car accident Wednesday, Feb. 4 on Mississippi  Highway 26 near the Poplarville campus.  Alexander is listed in good condition when first hospitalized but is later moved to intensive care for three days with internal bleeding that led to hemorrhagic shock. He is first released home Thursday, Feb. 12, readmitted early Feb. 18 with complications and released again on Feb. 20.  On March 3, Dr. Alexander has a mass of fluid and  infection in the pleural spaces around his lungs and an elevated temperature. He is admitted to the hospital for the third time and remains there another two weeks. Barbara suffers minor bruises and is not hospitalized.

  • PRCC alumnus and volunteer Betty Hudson is found slain in her Prentiss home.  Betty had helped stage a huge Marion-Jefferson Davis Alumni Chapter meeting the week before her death.
  • Board adopts $30.6 million budget

  • Dr. William Lewis of Petal selected tenth president of Pearl River 
  • Tiffany Vines is named to the All-USA  Academic First Team. Vines received a $2,500 stipend and was     featured in the April 10  edition of USA Today. Vines was one of only 20 selected from 1,400 applications. 
  • Dixie Drawl wins first place in the state for the 20th time

  • Tribute staged to recognize and honor Dr. Alexander for his untiring and  emarkable leadership of Pearl River Community College
  • Graduation exercises held on May 12
