Toni
Byrd—1976-77 Lady Wildcats Basketball
The
female athlete selected to be in the Hall of Fame (in 1988) is Toni Byrd
of Bay St. Louis. Byrd graduated from Poplarville High School and
played for the Lady Wildcats 1976-78.
Toni
played in the Mississippi Junior College All-Star game before getting a
scholarship at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
At Southeastern,
Byrd received the Athletic Scholastic Award for two years and was also
captain of the Lady Lions' team. She made honorable mention all-state
while setting team records for fee throws and assists during the 79-80
season.
Toni
played three years in the Louisiana Independent League and earned Most
Valuable Player honors and the Sportsmanship Award.
At Poplarville
High School, Toni made all-district four years, all-conference two years,
and was most valuable player two years. She was a cheerleader at
Poplarville High School for three years.
Byrd
has a bachelor's degree from Southeastern, as well as a master's of education.
She taught five years in the Louisiana Public School System.
Toni
is presently (in 1988) enrolled in pharmacy school at Xavier University
in New Orleans and she is working at the Slidell Memorial Hospital Pharmacy.
