Alumni inducted into Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame

  Pearl River Community College honored the accomplishments of five outstanding alumni by inducting them into the Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 29.
  Families and friends attended the dinner and induction ceremony in Hattiesburg to recognize John Hall, Dr. Carolyn Holden Lund, Maj. Gen. James I. “Ike” Pylant, Dr. Mike Walters and the late Martin Smith.
  The five, along with previous honorees, will serve as mentors to the students in the PRCC Honors Institute.

Learn maritime structural fitting at Hancock Center

  Pearl River Community College will offer a Maritime Structural Fitter course at the Hancock Center welding shop, 454 Highway 90 in Waveland.
  The course will meet from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 18, through Monday, July 20. Cost is $250 and will be collected the first day of class.
  The class offers an industry recognized maritime structural fitter certificate, including application for 10-hour OSHA certification and application for NCCER certification in the core curriculum, introduction to the maritime industry and Level 1 maritime structural fitter.

Columbia company donates to masonry program

  POPLARVILLE - A major donation from Columbia Block and Brick will further the education of brick, block and stonemasonry students at Pearl River Community College.
  The company donated $1,110 worth of supplies to the program - 1,040 bricks and 540 blocks in three sizes along with mortar.
  The donation frees budgeted funds for other uses, said Porter Soley, program director.
  “When budgets are tight, it helps to be able to buy tools for training,” he said.
  The company has provided several donations in the past to support the program.

Two concerts wrap up spring semester

  POPLARVILLE - Two concerts will close out the spring semester at Pearl River Community College.

  The PRCC Singers will perform Thursday, April 23, and three groups - RiverRoad, JazzCats and The Voices - will take the stage on Tuesday, April 28. Both concerts are at 7 p.m. in Smith Auditorium of the Ethel Holden Brownstone Center for the Arts.

  Under the direction of LaDona Tyson, the PRCC Singers will present a program of traditional and contemporary music for choirs on April 23.

PRCC hosts Congressional Art Show

  POPLARVILLE - A Forrest County Agricultural High School student will receive an expense-paid trip to the nation’s Capitol as the 4th District winner in the 2015 Congressional Art Forum.
  Brooke Lane’s drawing of a tiger was named Best in Show and will hang in the U.S. Capitol tunnel for a year along with the works of other high school artists from around the country. It also received the first place blue ribbon for drawing.

Nursing students use simulation lab

  POPLARVILLE - Students in the associate degree nursing program at Pearl River Community College gain almost life-like experience by using a simulation lab in the classroom.
  The lab was purchased with a $150,000 grant from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation.
  First-semester students Kayla Breland of Carriere and Kristi Guarino of Necaise used the lab Monday to prepare patient “Missy Duncan” for hip replacement surgery. Their classmates were assigned specific steps to monitor for discussion after the exercise.

Spence named alumni coordinator

  POPLARVILLE - Traci Comesana Spence has returned to her alma mater as coordinator of alumni services and Development Foundation administrative assistant at Pearl River Community College.
  Spence, a graduate of Purvis High School, earned an associate’s degree from PRCC in 2005. She went on to Louisiana State University where she earned a business marketing degree.

Three instrumental groups to perform Thursday

POPLARVILLE - Three instrumental groups at Pearl River Community College will be presented in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in Smith Auditorium of the Brownstone Center for the Arts.
The PRCC Concert Band, PRCC Wind Ensemble and PRCC Percussion Ensemble will perform.
 The concert will feature standard band literature as well as contemporary music for bands.  Selections will include “Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo” by Malcom Arnold and “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas” by Eric Whitacre as well as many other selections.
