Softball players earn national academic honors

  POPLARVILLE - Five Pearl River Community College softball players have earned Academic Student-Athlete Awards from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
  Breanna Herndon of Poplarville received the Superior Academic Achievement Award with a grade point average of  3.8 to 3.99.
  Shannon Buehler of Bay St. Louis, Hannah Holloway of Petal, Hannah Herndon and Rachel Hickman, both of Poplarville, received Exemplary Academic Achievement Awards with grade point averages of  3.6 to 3.79.

Honors scholarships awarded

Welding, pipe welding classes offered

  POPLARVILLE - Pearl River Community College will offer two Workforce Training welding classes in the evenings, beginning in August.
  Basic welding and a specialized course in pipe welding will be taught from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, beginning Aug. 10 and ending Nov. 18. Both will be in the Career Education Building welding shop on the Poplarville campus.

Apply for nursing assistant course

  POPLARVILLE - Applications will be accepted through July 23 for a certified nursing assistant course to be taught at Pearl River Community College.
  The course will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday and Thursday, beginning Aug. 10 and ending Oct. 29, at the Nursing Building on the Poplarville campus. Cost is $500 and includes the workbook and the fee for the NACES state examination.

Alsobrooks elected to national council

  POPLARVILLE - Dr. Scott Alsobrooks, vice president  for economic and community development at Pearl River Community College, has been elected to a two-year term on the board of directors for the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), starting July 1.
  Board members serve as links between the membership and the panel and assist members in promoting and implementing the concepts of career and technical education, basic skills education and workforce and economic development.

PRCC board adopts $37.4 million budget; No increase in student tuition

     POPLARVILLE - The Pearl River Community College Board of Trustees approved a budget of $37.4 million for the 2015-16 academic year Tuesday during the regular June meeting on the Poplarville campus.
    Roger Knight, Vice President for Business and Administrative Services, explained that the $37.4 million for the 2015-16 budget includes both restricted and unrestricted funds.
    “The new budget is an increase of $1.3 million over last year’s budget,” said Knight.

  POPLARVILLE - Applications are being accepted by Student Support Services at Pearl River Community College for the 10th anual Summer Bridge to College Program, also known as START.  The “START” acronym stands for Students Transitioning to Academic Success and Responsibilities at The Community College.

Mitch Deaver leaves legacy of quality

  POPLARVILLE - Mitch Deaver, a fixture along the sidelines of Pearl River Community College athletic fields and courts, died Monday, June 1, at his home.
  Deaver, 62, was sports information director at PRCC, a position he had held since April 1996. He was known throughout the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges for his cooperation and by sports editors for the quality of his photography.
