Smith-Carver family endows PRCC scholarship

POPLARVILLE - The Pearl River Community College Development Foundation recently accepted a $25,000 endowment from the Smith-Carver family of Poplarville.

The gift will open the Harold P. And Bertha S. Carver Endowment and fund the Smith-Carver Family Criminal Justice Scholarship. 

The donation was presented Sunday, Dec. 4, during a brief ceremony at Poplarville First United Methodist Church. Retired Picayune Police Chief Brenda Smith, niece of Pete and Bertha Carver, spoke for the family.

Child development students earn credits through PRCC

POPLARVILLE - Fourteen students have completed a seven-week course making them eligible to apply for credentials as child development associates.

The women received educational credits through Pearl River Community College’s Workforce Training Program.

“This diverse group of women worked diligently over the course of the program and were committed to both achieving their goals of working with young children and expanding their career opportunities,” said Dr. Pamela Thomas, director of Early Childhood Programs for Picayune schools who taught the course.

Mu Alpha Theta induction ceremony

Mu Alpha Theta, a mathematics honor society at Pearl River Community College that provides students with opportunities to further their mathematics career, held its induction ceremony Nov. 15 at the Forrest County Center in Hattiesburg. PRCC offers winter term short courses

POPLARVILLE - Registration is on-going for eight winter term classes offered by Pearl River Community College.
The classes will meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, through Saturday, Dec. 16, with 30-minute lunch breaks.
Classes offered on the Poplarville campus are world literature I, preschool and primary development, and social studies, math and science for the young child.
Forrest County Center classes are hybrid English composition I, world literature I, Spanish I, music appreciation and introduction to sociology.

PRCC plans for future in Hancock County

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College’s long-range plan is to build a new college in Hancock County in an effort to offer higher education opportunities that would aid local industry as well as the coastal workforce.

That goal received a $2.5 million boost this week when the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality announced that PRCC was one of the 19 new projects that will benefit from BP and Deepwater Horizon oil spill money.

PRCC hosting big band Christmas show Nov. 28

POPLARVILLE - The big band sound comes to Poplarville on Tuesday, Nov. 28, with a performance by Denver and the Mile High Orchestra.

Christmas show coming to PRCC in Hattiesburg

The Forrest County Center of Pearl River Community College will present an evening of holiday music on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
Making Spirits Bright is a fund-raiser for costs associated with bringing a donated grand piano to the center.
