Orientation - Online Library Catalog

 To locate materials (books, magazines and journals, audiovisual materials, and computer programs) through the online library catalog from Pearl River's home page www.prcc.edu  use the following steps:

• Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library. 
• Click on Online Library Catalog link from the Libraries' Welcome page.
• This will take you into the Online Catalog.
• Type in your search.
• Click on the drop down arrow located to the left of the search box to choose the appropriate search option.
• Click on search button.

    Once you have clicked on the appropriate search option your search results
    page should appear.  This screen will tell you how many items were found for 
    your search.
• Click on the word details to see the item's record.  This screen will include complete bibliographic information for the item.  At the bottom of the screen is the location information, Garvin H. Johnston Library, Forrest County Center Library, or Hancock Center Library, how many copies of the item each campus has and the location within the library.  eBooks will be indicated by the word Online in the location field.

Orientation - Online Books  (eBooks)

The library has subscribed to online books that are available through the online library catalog or through netLibrary on the Online Resources page on the Libraries' site. 
In order to access an online book, you must create an ebook account.
The student must have an email account to create their ebook account.

Creating an eBook account

• Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
• Click on the ONLINE RESOURCES button on the left side of the page.
• Click on the netLibrary link.
• The netLibrary website will appear.
• Click on Create a Free Account on the right side of the screen and fill out the informaiton.
• Click Submit then click Accept.
• Exit site by clicking Log out.

• Search PRCC online library catalog.
• From the list of materials retrieved, eBooks will be indicated on the left of the screen with a URL link.
• Click on the URL link.
• Click Log in at top of screen.
• Type in your User name and Password then click the log in button.
• Choose one of the following:  Browse this eBook online or Check out and read online.
• Click Log out to exit

• Students must be on a campus to create an eBook account or contact the library at  601-403-1332.
• Students must first have an email account before creating an ebook account.
• The ebook account must be created first before students can view the material.
• When searching the catalog an online book will be indicated by the words ONLINE in  the location and netLibraryBooks for the material type.
• While in the catalog a student can check out or read the eBook online for 4 hours.  When the student leaves the catalog, logs out or 4 hours have passed the eBook is no longer checked out to the student.

Orientation - The Magnolia Project

The Magnolia Project, Mississippi’s statewide consortium, is funded by the Mississippi Legislature.  MAGNOLIA provides online databases for publicly funded K-12 schools, public libraries, community college libraries, and university libraries in Mississippi.

 To find magazine and journal articles through EBSCOhost from the PRCC home page www.prcc.edu  use the following steps:

• Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
• Click on the ONLINE RESOURCES button on the left side of the screen.
• Click on The Magnolia Project link. 
• Click on the database or databases from the list on the left side of the screen that best fits your subject.   (ex. Academic Search Elite-this is the most useful to the majority of college students)
• The next screen will ask you for a password. Type in the appropriate password from the list above.
• Again click on the database or databases from the list on the left side of the screen that best fits your subject.   (ex. Academic Search Elite-this is the most useful to the majority of college students)
• The next screen is your search screen, type in your subject.  To retrieve the full text articles, make sure that you have clicked on the box marked Full Text and the box marked search within full text articles.  If these boxes are not checked the database will pull up abstracts of articles.  To obtain professional, scholarly (peer reviewed) journals, make sure that you have clicked on that box.  After typing in your search and placing check marks in the boxes, click on search to retrieve your hits.

  Note:  Help on refining or broadening your search is available on each screen.

• The next screen lists the articles or hits that the database found for your search.  To see the full article click on the HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text links.
• Below is a description of the databases that are most useful to college students.

Indexes journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture.
  Ebooks
OCLC catalog of online electronic books available through libraries worldwide.
  ECO
An OCLC collection of scholarly journals.
  UnionLists
List of periodicals held by OCLC member libraries.
  WorldCat
Records of any type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. Includes manuscripts written as early as the 12th century.

     Business and Company Resource Center with PROMPT
Business & Company Resource Center brings together in a single database company profiles, company brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information. 
  Business Index ASAP
Instant access to academic and business journals with full text and images.  Covers research on management issues, economic indicators and business theories and practices, as well as on the activities of companies and industries worldwide. 
  Contemporary Literary Criticism - Select
Provides an extensive collection of critical essays on contemporary writers. Each CLC Select entry also contains a biographical/critical introduction including pseudonyms and nationality, a listing of principal works, and sources for further study.
    Contemporary Authors
Provides current biographical and bibliographical information on modern authors of fiction, general nonfiction, poetry, journalism, drama, motion pictures, television, and other fields. Provides complete biographical and bibliographical references for more than 90,000 authors in the U.S. and around the world.
  Discovering Collection
Combines DISCovering Authors and EXPLORING Poetry with numerous other databases to form a comprehensive database. Retrieve in-depth reference content for the core curriculum areas of Literature, History, Biographies, Science, and Social Studies. Includes Merriam Websters Collegiate, Biographical, and Geographical Dictionaries.
  Dictionary of Literary Biography
Provides nearly 10,000 biographical and critical essays on the lives, works, and careers of the world's most influential literary figures from all eras and genres.
  General BusinessFile ASAP
Find articles on finance, acquisitions & mergers, international trade, money management, new technologies & products, local & regional business trends, investments, and banking.
  PROMT: Predicasts Overview of Markets and Technology
Research companies, the products and technologies they produce, and the markets in which they compete. Includes summaries and full text from nearly 1,000 business and trade journals, industry newsletters, newspapers, market research studies, news releases, and investment and brokerage firm reports. 

IV.  Full-Text Poetry Sources
Includes the following web sties:  Academy of American Poets, American Verse Project, Bartleby.com Verse Collection, Contemporary American Poetry Archive, Internet Poetry Archive, Modern American Poetry, Online Books Page, Poetry and Prose of the Harlem Renaissance, The Poetry Archives, Representative Poetry Online, and Vers Libre.

Listed below are the SIRS databases and a description of each.
  SIRS Discoverer
Designed to develop research, reading, writing, language and computer skills in middle and elementary school students. 
  SIRS Researcher
General reference database that contains thousands of full-text articles exploring social, scientific, health, historic, economic, business, political and global issues. Articles are from domestic and international newspapers, magazines, journals and U.S. government publications.

VI.  WILSON BIOGRAPHIES
Contains the full text of 39,000 profiles of notable individuals taken from biographical reference works such as Current Biography, Junior Authors and Illustrators, World Artists, Nobel Prize Winners, and Spanish American Authors. The database is searchable by name, profession, place of origin, gender, race/ethnicity, date of birth, and keyword.

Orientation - MELO

MELO (Mississippi Electronic Libraries Online)  is an electronic environment that mirrors the traditional library through online databases, electronic books and journals, and scholarly websites.  It strives to collect, store and organize information on a broad range of subjects.  By encouraging cooperative efforts of the Mississippi Community Colleges and by promoting economic delivery of information, MELO supports the needs and interests of students and faculty.  Content for the collection is examined for its currency, usefulness and relevancy within the scope of appropriate academic materials.  Selection considerations include appearance as to design, content, authority, and ease of accessibility. 

To access MELO from the PRCC home page www.prcc.edu use the following steps:

• Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
• Click on the ONLINE RESOURCES button on the left side of the page.
• Click on the MELO link.  The Tutorial link under MELO is a very useful resource.
• The next screen provides you the with links to the main subject heading through MELO.

Orientation - Humanities Index Online
  Or Essay and General Literature Index

The Humanities Index Online provides journal articles in the humanities disciplines: literature, religion, philosophy, and music.  It also includes subjects that are traditionally considered to be social sciences, such as archaeology, area studies, and journalism.  Indexing goes back as far as 1984 for some journals, with full-text coverage for selected titles beginning in 1995.  A tab in the Help screen leads to information about journal coverage, and this list includes start/end dates of indexing and/or full-text coverage as well as peer review status.  At this point 506 titles are listed in the Humanities database, including active as well as ceased or dropped titles.

Essay and General Literature Index is a bibliographic database that cites essays and articles contained in collections of essays and miscellaneous works published in the Unted States, Great Britain, and Canada.  More than 300 volumes and more than 20 annuals and serial publications are indexed each year. Essay and General Literature Index also provides full bibliographic information on collective titles indexed and focuses on the humanities and social sciences, with subject coverage ranging from economics, political science, and history to criticism of literary works, drama, and film.

Cummulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature Database with full-text articles, the definitive database for nursing and allied health research accompanied by ProQuest Nursing Journals, which provides complete full-text information from leading nursing and allied health magazines, journals, and dissertations.

• To narrow search by date, click on the drop down arrow on the Date Range box.
• Place a check mark in the Full-text documents only and/or Scholarly journals including peer-reviewed to narrow search.

CQ Research is an original and comprehensive report and analysis on issues in the news.  The single themed CQ Researcher report offers in-depth, non-biased coverage of political and social issues, with regulare reports on topics in health, international affairs education, the environment, technology and the U.S. economy.

Orientation - Issues & Controversies

Issues & Controversies is a reference database that provides a well-balanced, objective analysis of controversial issues.  It gives opposing viewpoints on both current and historical issues.  Each report includes outlines, chronologies, sidebars, illustrations, and active web links.

This source offers reviewed analyses and brief plot summaries of the most studied works in literature.  The information in this database equals the complete contents of 31 sets of reference books, including Masterplots, Masterplots II, Cyclopedia of World Authors, Cyclopedia of Literary Charaters, and 10 years of Magill's Literary Annuals & book reviews.
