Faulkner sweeps River

BAY MINETTE, Ala. The Pearl River Lady Wildcats bats werent cracking here Friday and the host Faulkner State Lady Sun Chiefs walked away with a pair of softball victories. PRCC, the reigning MACJC state champions, managed a combined six hits three in each loss in its doubleheader with FSCC and fell 4-2 and 2-0 to drop to 12-6 overall. Faulkner State, which fell to Pearl River 2-1 and 7-0 in a previous twin bill played Feb. 15 in Poplarville, improved to 18-12. In the first game, things were scoreless for the first two innings, but The River went up 1-0 in the top of the first only to see the Lady Sun Chiefs score three in the bottom of the frame. Faulkner added a solo run in the bottom of the fifth, while the Lady Wildcats scored their final run in the top of the sixth. Starter Elizabeth Buchanan (5-3) got the win in going the distance, striking out six and walking one; while Heather Hester (5-3) of Hancock County High got the loss in relief of starter Laura LeJune of Iota (La.) High. LeJune pitched two-and-two-thirds innings, giving up two hits, striking and one, and walking two; while Hester relieved in the third. She gave up four hits, struck out two, and hit a batter. Hester paced PRCC at the plate with a pair of singles (one RBI), while Jordan Adams of DIberville High doubled. Jimishia Bennett led FSCC six-hit effort with a double and a single, while Courtney Singley had two base hits and Shannon Barnhill and Kati Reeves both singled. Faulkner State committed one error in the game to Pearl River none. In the nightcap, things were scoreless for the first four-and-a-half innings with the Lady Sun Chiefs scoring solo runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth frames to take the win. Starter Jessica Bush (6-4) got the win in going the distance, giving up three hits, striking out eight, and walking three; while starter Hester (5-4) got the loss in going the distance despite throwing a four-hitter. She struck out two and walked two. Brittney Gary of Slidell (La.) High, Paris Redd of Greene County High, and Brandy Rester of Poplarville High all singled for Pearl River. Carli Middleton doubled for FSCC, while Ashley Ivey, Chrissy Johnson, and Singley all singled. The Lady Wildcats again played error free, while the Lady Sun Chiefs had one defensive miscue. Pearl River puts its perfect 4-0 MACJC South Division record on the line Tuesday when it travels to division rival East Central in Decatur for a 3 p.m. doubleheader, then travels to Mississippi Delta in Moorhead Thursday for a 2 p.m. non-division twin bill. South Division leader Mississippi Gulf Coast visits PRCC Saturday for a 12 noon doubleheader. Pearl River travels to Faulkner State in Bay Minette, Ala., Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before putting its perfect 2-0 MACJC South Division mark on the line against East Central in Decatur Tuesday in a 3 p.m. twin bill.
