Grant helps replace medical radiology equipment

The medical radiology technology program at Pearl River Community College’s Forrest County Center received a grant from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation for replacement and upgrade of its laboratory equipment.
The foundation provided $40,000 of the estimated $130,000 cost to upgrade one digital radiography machine and replace another that can’t be repaired. Without the two machines, the students will not know how to operate the equipment used in hospitals and clinics when they enter the job market.
“Pearl River Community College is grateful to the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation for funding this opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Jana Causey, vice president for Forrest County operations. “Our students will gain the preliminary and necessary training on our new digital radiography equipment to be competent, safe, and prepared to see patients in the clinical setting.
“We are so thankful that the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation sets their priorities on helping our communities have the best possible healthcare through initiatives such as this one.”
In the past decade, 57 students from Pearl River County, where the foundation is based, have completed the program and at least 15 are currently working in hospitals or clinics in the county.
“The foundation is pleased to support PRCC in its effort to modernize the medical radiologic program activities at the college,” said Clyde Dease, foundation president. “If we are to produce well trained, proficient graduates to take care of the medical testing needs of the community, it begins with ensuring that our students have the most up-to-date equipment available to them.
“This digital equipment will ensure that our students have state-of-the-art technology on which to develop their medical X-ray skills.”
