Holmes sweeps River

GOODMAN Pearl River Community College was swept by Holmes in MACJC non-division women and men basketball action here Monday with its women falling 66-59 and its men 90-59. Both Wildcat squads dropped to 1-2 overall, while the host Bulldog teams remain undefeated at 2-0. In the women game, the Lady Bulldogs led 29-24 at the break before outscoring the Lady Wildcats by two 37-35 in the second half to take the seven-point victory. Quentessa Bullock of East Marion High paced PRCC with 12 points, while Branita Malone out of Choctaw High in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., added 12 (five rebounds). Shanta Echols of Sumrall High scored nine (five rebounds), Francheska Bowman, Malone prep teammate at Choctaw (Fla.) High (four rebounds), and Toy Johnson of Pascagoula High (five assists), eight each; Daiquari Raine of Poplarville High four (six rebounds), Stephanie Fratesi out of Washington High in Leland three (four rebounds), Chaquita McGee of Yazoo City High two, and Samantha Gunn out of Velma Jackson High in Canton one. For Holmes, Kierra Gilmore led the way with a game-high 18 points (four rebounds), while Dierra Gilmore added 10 (five rebounds), Amber Clay (nine rebounds) and Jessica Miles (seven rebounds), nine each; Louise Collins eight (five rebounds), Cierra Anderson six, and Kierra Anderson, Marquita Tidwell, and Jacquonna Young, two a piece. Pearl River hit 69.2 percent (nine of 13) from the free throw line to Holmes 66.7 percent (22 of 32), while the Lady Wildcats were 24 of 54 (44.4 percent) from the field to the Lady Bulldogs 20 of 57 (35.1 percent) effort. From three-point range, PRCC was two of eight (25 percent) and HCC was four of 19 (21.1 percent). Holmes women out-rebounded The River 42-34. In the men game, the Wildcats were victimized by a whopping 30 turnovers to the Bulldogs 17. Holmes led 32-23 at the intermission, then dominated Pearl River 58-36 in the second half to take the lopsided 31-point victory. Zane Knowles, a Grambling State (La.) transfer from Nassau, Bahamas, led the Wildcats with 14 points (four rebounds); while Yondarius Johnson, another Grambling transfer, added 11 (five rebounds, four assists). Quentin Watkins out of Lanier High in Jackson (five assists) and Jeremy Moore out of Jim Hill High in Jackson scored six each, Daron Bell of Bay High (eight rebounds) and Daterris Rogers of Wayne County High, five each; Mike Henry of Wayne County High three, Josh Carpenter of Oak Grove High, Jamaiason Hadley out of East Side High in Clinton, Raheem England of Decatur, Ala. (six rebounds), and Marcus Rawls of Picayune Memorial High, two a piece; and Derionne Stewart of Picayune Memorial High one. Knowles and Hadley had five turnovers each for The River. DeAndre Scott paced Holmes with a game-high 20 points (five rebounds), while Torrance Rowe added 16 (four rebounds), Deangelo Priar 15, Demarcus Lewis 14 (seven rebounds), Emmanuel Dias nine (seven rebounds), Daveon Slaughter seven (six rebounds), and Tiven Marzette, Donnell Nicholas, and Kevin Smith, two a piece. Pearl River hit 45.3 percent (10 of 23) from the free throw line to Holmes 70.7 percent (29 of 41), while the Wildcats were 23 of 53 (43.4 percent) from the field to the Bulldogs 27 of 61 (44.3 percent) effort. From three-point range, PRCC was three of nine (33.3 percent) and HCC was seven of 15 (46.7 percent). Both teams finished with 40 rebounds each. The Wildcats return to action Thursday when they host Southern Sports Academy in Shivers Gymnasium at 6 p.m. in their home opener, while both River squads travel to MACJC non-division foe Mississippi Delta in Moorhead Monday, Nov. 14, for 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) games. Pearl River and Holmes eye women and men rematches Thursday, Nov. 17, at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) in Poplarville.
