Maghan James completes fellowship program

POPLARVILLE – Maghan James of Hattiesburg has completed the Education Policy Fellowship Progam (EPFP) which works to develop a diverse and collaborative community of strategic leaders for effective public policy.
James, who was recently named Dean of Students at Pearl River Community College, traveled with 17 other Mississippi and four Alabama community college leaders to Washington, D.C., to advocate for year-round Pell Grant aid for students.
“My trip to Washington, D.C., was an unbelievable experience,” James said. “The time we spent with our Mississippi congressional and senatorial representatives and their staff members advocating the importance of year-round Pell Grants for our students was well received. The most important thing we can do as education professionals is to support our students and help them overcome obstacles and achieve success.”
The group lobbied for flexibility by allowing students to use Pell Grant funds for summer semesters. Such flexibility helps boost completion rates giving students an earlier entry into the workforce as well as helping part-time students access the funds.
James and her peers met with 3rd District Rep. Gregg Harper and the staffs of Sen. Thad Cochran and 4th District Rep. Steven Palazzo.

Each community college president is asked to bring two (2) wrapped door prizes, minimum value of $50 each. We will have a station set up at the conference for you to drop off the door prizes.

Each community college is asked to provide name tags for their Board members, administration, and staff attending the conference.
