POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River celebrated its 2020 graduates with two socially distanced ceremonies Wednesday and Thursday night in Dobie Holden Stadium.

The first ceremony on July 29 included graduates of career or technical programs including allied health and nursing. The July 30 ceremony included graduates earning Associate in Arts degrees.

“Those of us who work here at Pearl River do so because we find great joy in watching our students grow,” PRCC President Dr. Adam Breerwood said to the Class of 2020. “At Pearl River, we like to call these times of mind-blowing-craziness ‘opportunities for growth.’ It goes without saying that this past spring semester everyone — students and employees — had an opportunity to grow way more than any of us wanted at the time. From the way things look, we are going to get to continue growing this fall.

“We’ve been saying it since March: ‘Wildcats Never Quit.’ We are so proud of you for persevering through to today.”

Throughout the ceremony, Breerwood honored several student groups such as Phi Theta Kappa, SkillsUSA, National Technical Honors Society and more by asking them to stand and be congratulated.

In line with Pearl River’s plans for the fall, chairs were spaced 6 feet apart on the field. PRCC employees wore masks and attendees were encouraged to wear masks and socially distance from one another. Students were allowed four tickets for their guests, to reduce capacity at the event. For those unable to attend, Pearl River live streamed both ceremonies; the videos are posted on PRCC’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Final remarks both nights were made by Breerwood just as rain started to sprinkle. The weather held off long enough for students to be congratulated one final time.

“It is up to you to help grow the next generation of Wildcats,” Breerwood said. “We know the value of helping people grow ‘River Strong,’ and we know you have what it takes to help the growing continue.”
