Pearl River unveils 2020-21 theme: We Are W1ldcats

Pearl River Community College is highlighting the strength of the Wildcat Family with its new theme for the 2020-21 school year:

“We Are Commun1ty. We Are Fam1ly. We Are W1ldcats.”

These words represent a variety of experiences that are at the heart of what it means to be a Pearl River Wildcat. No matter the background or plans for the future, those at The River are invited, accepted and held to a standard in line with the “Wildcat Way” of living.

“Our students have adapted exceptionally to the challenges we have all incurred through COVID-19 this year,” PRCC President Dr. Adam Breerwood said. “The new marketing theme encompasses the values and morals we try to instill in our students through the Wildcat Way of living. We teach our students that through Pride, Respect, Class and Character they will become successful members of our local communities. We take the role of being a community, family and role model for our students very seriously. The ‘We are Commun1ty, We are Fam1ly, We are W1ldcats’ theme is heartfelt and we welcome everyone to be a part of the great things happening at PRCC.”

As an institution that prides itself on aiding students to become successful community members who embody pride, respect, class and character, Pearl River expects this year’s rally cry will strengthen the feeling of what it means to be a Wildcat.

“With everything that has been thrown in our direction during this pandemic, one thing remains — we are united, we are W1ldcats,” PRCC Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communication Candace Harper said. “Together we can overcome anything and that is exactly the message we want to convey to our students, employees and community through this marketing theme. When you become a Wildcat, you’re backed by a fierce group of Wildcats that can push through adversity, overcome insurmountable challenges, and come out on the other side stronger.”

As new Wildcats beginning their journey at The River take time to learn how to be a college student, they are also learning where they fit into our Wildcat Family.

“I feel like we as students are welcomed on campus and made to feel like this place is ours to utilize,” PRCC Sophomore Ariyon Antoine said. “No matter who you are or where you came from, you are given support, encouragement and motivation. You are made to feel a part of the Wildcat Family.”

Employees at PRCC have also witnessed instances of the Wildcat Community feeling.

“The Fall 2021 semester has presented numerous opportunities for growth, and it has been rejuvenating to watch the responses,” Senior Vice President for Instruction/Provost Dr. Martha Lou Smith said. “Simply being supportive of a fellow employee who is learning a new teaching strategy or supportive of a student who is enrolled in college classes for the first time has been an opportunity to demonstrate the unity that is reflected in We are W1ldcats.”

The collaboration and support presented at The River is not only building up students but facilitating the successes of colleagues as well.

“A rising tide lifts all boats,” Director of Choral Groups Dr. LaDona Tyson said. “This statement applies to daily life at PRCC. We succeed by helping one another, by bringing others with us as we excel. We are not left to face challenges without leadership or support, we continue to persevere through adversity as a community. There is an overwhelming sense that adversity breeds strength and success, not failure. When I come to work each day, I know that I am a part of a community.  I have been so fortunate to receive help and mentorship from administrators and other teachers.  Likewise, I know that I share in the responsibility of helping and mentoring others. I believe this is foundational to our success, and that this mindset is passed along to our students.”

PRCC Vice President for Forrest County Center, Allied Health and Nursing Programs Dr. Jana Causey quoted Babe Ruth’s famous words on individualism versus unity: “You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.”

Causey added: “At Pearl River Community College, we know that we must be united in our efforts to put our students on a pathway to success, to grow and support our surrounding communities, and to elevate the opportunities of the people in our district. Every part of this family is important, and we all play a part in a bigger picture, a beautiful and complex picture that ultimately can change lives.”

“We Are W1ldcats” signifies to others what those a part of Pearl River Community College already know. There is a strong, supportive and loyal family waiting for you at The River.
