River sweeps Hinds

POPLARVILLE Pearl River Community College now boasts winning marks in both its overall and MACJC South Division records after an impressive 8-0, 3-0 doubleheader sweep over Hinds here Friday in Lady Wildcat Stadium.PRCC improved to 15-14 overall and 7-5 in division play with the wins, while HCC dropped to 12-20 and 3-11.The host Lady Wildcats avenged two earlier losses to the Lady Eagles in both team division openers played March 1 in Raymond when Hinds pulled off an 8-6, 2-1 sweep.In Friday action, Pearl River dominated the first game. Hinds managed a pair of base runners in the top of the opening frame via walks, but couldnt push a run home; while the Lady Wildcats exploded with five in the bottom of the frame.Janessa Dedeaux of Poplarville High and Heather Hester of Hancock County High got The River rolling with back-to-back, one-out singles, then Alyssa Graeter of Poplarville High walked. Neely McCrary of Petal High reached on an error to push two runs home before Christina Hart out of Northshore High in Slidell, La., doubled in Graeter to make it 3-0. Amanda Emerson of Sumrall High followed with a two-run double to left center.The Lady Eagles left runners stranded at second and third, while the Lady Wildcats added a solo run in the bottom of the inning. Lead off Whitney Waits of Oak Grove High reached on an error with Hester walking an out later. After Hester was thrown out at second on an attempted steal, Graeter walked and McCrary pushed Waits home when she reached on a fielder choice.After a scoreless third, fourth, and fifth innings; Hinds went three up, three down in the top off the sixth; while Pearl River scored two in the bottom of the frame to end the game via the eight-run rule.Waits outran a one-out bunt for a base hit, stole second, and scored when Hester reached on an error. Graeter followed with an RBI double down the third-base line for the game-ending eighth run.Hester (5-3) picked up the win in her four innings on the mound, giving up a hit, striking out one, walking three, and hitting two batters; while McCrary relieved in the fifth.Danielle Smith (6-9) got the loss in her four innings on the mound, giving up four hits, striking out one, and walking three; while Whitney Patterson relieved in the fifth, giving up three hits and recording a strikeout.Dominque Corona single was the Lady Eagles only hit of the contest, while Grater paced The River seven-hit effort with a double and a single (one RBI). Dedeaux had two base hits, Emerson (two RBIs) and Hart (one RBI) both doubled, and Waits singled. McCrary had three RBIs for PRCC, while Hester had one.Hinds committed four errors in the game to Pearl River none.In the nightcap game, Graeter led ff the bottom of the second with a home run over the center field fence before the Lady Wildcats managed two more runs in the fifth.Shannon Brown of Petal High led off with an infield single to third base before scoring when Waits reached on an error winding up at second. Dedeaux sacrifice bunted Waits to third before Brittany LeBlanc out of North Vermillion High in Lafayette, La., sacrificed her home for the game final run.McCrary (3-5) got the mound win in going the distance, giving up three hits; while Cassandra Brown (0-4) got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up six hits and striking out two.The Lady Eagles finished with three hits, including a pair of singles by Skyla Meek and a base hit by Patterson; while McCrary led PRCC six-hit effort with two singles.Graeter homered (one RBI) and Dedeaux, Emerson, and Ariel Russell of DIberville High all had base hits. LeBlanc and Waits both had an RBI for the Lady Wildcats.Pearl River returns to action Wednesday when East Central hosts a South Division doubleheader in Decatur before Southwest Mississippi plays host in Summit Tuesday, April 10. Both twin bills start at 3 p.m.
