River sweeps MMI

MARION, Ala. Pearl River Lady Wildcats swept Marion Military Institute (Ala.) here Wednesday with 4-2 and 6-3 victories to improve to 12-4 overall. The wins marked a seasonal sweep over the Lady Tigers for 2011, as The River, the reigning MACJC state champion, opened its season with a pair of 12-4 and 9-0 decisions Feb. 8 in Poplarville. MMI dropped to 6-8 with the losses. In the first game, Marion Military went up 2-0 with solo runs in the bottom of the first and fourth innings, but PRCC scored a run in the top of the fifth before icing the victory with three in the sixth. Starter Sheila Hall (6-2) out of Dutchtown (La.) High School got the win in going the distance, giving up 10 hits, striking out five, and walking two; while MMI starter Gabby McDaniel, also hurling the distance, was the losing pitcher. She gave up six hits, struck out one, and walked four. ETrareo Warren of Meridian High paced the Lady Wildcats with two singles (one RBI), while Brittney Gary of Slidell (La.) High and Paris Redd (one RBI) of Greene County High both doubled. Jordan Adams of DIberville High (one RBI) and Janessa Dedeaux (one RBI) of Poplarville High both had singles. Mary Ellen Pilitowski led the Lady Tigers with four base hits, while Kasey Ost doubled and singled, Alex Sullivan doubled, and Halley Ingram, Kara Miles, and Brittni Trawick all had base hit. Pearl River committed two errors in the game to Marion Military one. In the nightcap, PRCC opened things with a three-run barrage in the top of the first, while MMI added a solo run in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Wildcats added a run in the third and two more in the sixth, while the Lady Tigers had solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Starter Heather Hester (5-2) of Hancock County High was the winning pitcher in going the distance, giving up eight hits, striking out a season-high eight batters, and walking two. MMI starter Brittany Harmon also went the distance, giving up 11hits and striking out four. Dedeaux led PRCC with three singles (one RBI), while Gary (one RBI) and Brandy Rester of Poplarville High had two singles each. Adams (two RBIs), Megan Reynolds Hancock County High, Warren, and Kasey Watkins of Perry Central High all singled. Hester contributed an RBI. For the Lady Tigers, Trawick led the way with a double and a single, while Mariah Ozuna doubled and Alexis Bullington, Ashlin Ingram, Jasmine James, Ost, and Pilitowski all had base hits. MMI committed three errors in the contest to PRCC none. Pearl River travels to Faulkner State in Bay Minette, Ala., Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before putting its perfect 2-0 MACJC South Division mark on the line against East Central in Decatur Tuesday in a 3 p.m. twin bill.
