POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College is starting to gather steam at the right time of the season, and the Wildcats used that momentum to roll over Meridian 83-49 Thursday night in men’s basketball action at Meridian.
PRCC (14-2 overall) remained in a tie for first place in the South Division at 6-2; Meridian dropped to 5-12 and 2-6.
Pearl River never trailed, but the Eagles kept it close for much of the first half, before the Wildcats went on a 9-2 run over a three-minute period late in the half to get some separation, and they led 38-31 at halftime.
The Wildcats then stepped on the gas to open the season half, starting the period with a 7-0 run and later had a 13-0 surge to turn the game into a rout.
For the game, Pearl River shot 57.1 percent from the field (32 of 56), the 10th time this season the Wildcats have shot 50 percent or better from the field.
PRCC had four players in double figures in scoring, led by freshman Eric Thornton Jr. (Jackson) with 16 points. Sophomore Rodney Mallett (Lexington) had a season-high 14 points, freshman Jonas James III (Jackson) had 13 points and freshman Cedric Brim Jr. (Tupelo) added 12 points.
The Wildcats will have a critical home stand next week, with games Monday against Southwest and Thursday against Jones County. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. starts and both will livestream on prccmedia.com.
