PRCC women tie, men lose in division contests with Miss. Gulf Coast
MGCCC ladies rally for double-OT 3-3 stalemate; Bulldogs still undefeated in South Division play with 2-1 win over Wildcats
POPLARVILLE - Saturday just wasn't Pearl River Community College's day when it comes to women's and men's MACJC South Division soccer.
The Lady Wildcats blew a 3-0 lead in the second half when the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs rallied for three unanswered goals over a 10-minute span to knot things up and that stalemate remained intact through two overtime periods.
The Wildcat squad, on the other hand, trailed 2-1 at the intermission in the men's contest and battled the Bulldogs to a scoreless stalemate in the second half to collect its first division loss of the year.
PRCC's women fell to 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in division play, while MGCCC is now 8-1-1 and 3-0-1. The River's men dropped to 6-2 and 3-1, while Gulf Coast is not 9-1 and 4-0.
In women's action, Stephanie Fratesi of Greenville and Carleigh Holley of Tupelo scored first-half goals to give Pearl River a 2-0 lead at the break; then Jordan Organ of Forrest County AHS added a score in the opening minutes of the second half to pump the Lady Wildcats' lead to 3-0.
But the Lady Bulldogs rallied back with three quick scores. Courtney Fairley's two goals sandwiched a Kelly Lopez boot to knot things up at 3-3 and send things into OT. Courtney's final goal came with 14 seconds left in regulation.
After two scoreless overtime periods, things ended in a tie.
In men's action, Steven Lepre and Michael Munoz scored first-half goals for the Bulldogs; while Joe Adejo of Abuja, Nigeria, scored some 15 minutes into the contest to tie things up at 1-1.
The two squads battled to a scoreless stalemate in the second half.
PRCC returns to action Friday with a road trip to non-division foe Itawamba in Fulton with games at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men), then returns to South Division action Saturday when Southwest Mississippi plays host in Summit at 1 p.m. (women) and 3 p.m. (men). The Lady Wildcats took a 6-0 shutout over SMCC Sept. 11 in Poplarville, while the Wildcats were 4-0 winners over the Bears.
Pearl River and Gulf Coast eye rematches in both schools' regular-season finales Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Perkinston.
